Inspired by the melting ice of Lapland and using a wooden template, Tapio Wirkkala created the Ultima Thule glass surface in 1960. The special design reveals the thousands of hours spent perfecting the glassblowing technique required to achieve such a result. True, the products gradually change, because the glass burns the surface of the wooden templates. 2015 marked Tapio Wirkkala's 100 years. To honor the great designer, IITTALA added 190mm platters to the Ultima Thule collection.
